Podcaster and comedian Adam Carolla slammed California Governor Gavin Newsom as a “world-class douchebag” for exaggerating claims about growing up poor during an appearance on a podcast hosted by former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson.

Carolla accused Newsom of being inauthentic, saying he has “no personality other than the personality he perceives other people wanting him to have when he’s in the room with them. So, when he’s in the room with the brothers, let’s talk about mac-n-cheese and sandwiches.”

Newsom, during the podcast, described his childhood as difficult, saying he grew up “hustlin’” and “kind of raising myself,” portraying a hardship-filled, lower-class upbringing. “Kraft macaroni and cheese, that’s how I grew up, bro,” he said.

Carolla pushed back, pointing out Newsom’s privileged background. “His dad was lead counsel for Getty Oil. Getty is one of the richest families in the country, maybe in the world… his dad was a judge and a lawyer, and the Gettys were close family friends,” Carolla told his audience. He added sarcastically, “And when he started his winery at 25, he got the money from the Getty family—just like you and I did when we were 25.”

In reality, Newsom grew up in Marin County, California, one of the wealthiest areas in the state. His high school town, Larkspur, has a median household income of $135,000—about 60% higher than the national average.

Newsom is reportedly trying to position himself for a potential 2028 Democratic presidential run after a recent poll suggested he trails former Vice President Kamala Harris among Democratic and independent voters.
