Once a popular Halloween choice, Donald Trump costumes are no longer in demand across Canada, with costume retailers reporting a steep decline in interest amid shifting political attitudes and trade-related tensions.

Shop owners say Trump-themed costumes were a huge hit in 2016, when he first ran for office, but the novelty has since faded. According to the Canadian Press, the decline in popularity appears connected to changing views of the U.S. president in Canada, particularly following trade disputes and his administration’s tough stance on tariffs.

“The demand just isn’t there anymore,” said Christy Greenwood, owner of Theatre Garage in Edmonton, Alberta. “We haven’t had anyone asking to dress up like Trump in years, and I think a lot of it has to do with the whole ‘51st state’ rhetoric. People are going back to the classics—clowns, vampires, witches, that kind of thing.”

In Hamilton, Ontario—a city hit hard by American steel tariffs—costume shops have noticed a similar trend. Catriona Cameron, assistant manager at Theatrix, said there hasn’t been a single request for a Trump wig this year. “We’re actually getting more interest in Mountie outfits,” she said, noting that even customers renting astronaut costumes have asked to have American flags removed.

While Canadian enthusiasm for Trump-themed costumes has cooled, President Trump will spend Halloween at Mar-a-Lago, where the resort’s traditional season-opening Halloween celebration is set to take place, according to the Palm Beach Daily News.
