A routine police pursuit in Los Angeles ended in tragedy Friday evening when a suspect fleeing in a stolen van was killed in a collision on the 110 Freeway, with the incident captured live on television.
According to official reports and live footage from CBS Los Angeles, the chase began shortly after 8:30 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a white van reported stolen. The driver refused to yield and entered the northbound lanes near the Avenue 43 exit, in the Mount Washington and Chinatown area.
As the vehicle slowed, the suspect exited through the driver’s side window while the van was still in motion, falling onto the freeway’s center median before stepping into southbound traffic. He was struck head-on by oncoming vehicles and hit again by additional cars.

The incident was broadcast live from a network helicopter, prompting shocked reactions from anchors in the studio. KTLA reported that police immediately attempted life-saving measures as they waited for paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department. By the time emergency responders arrived, the suspect had died and was covered with a white sheet in the freeway’s center lanes.
No other individuals were in the van. Animal control was called to remove a dog found inside the vehicle; its condition has not been confirmed.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the fatal collision.
