Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has voiced opposition to President Donald Trump’s plans to build a new ballroom at the White House, framing the project as a misstep in an appeal to voters.
In a post on X Tuesday morning, Clinton wrote, “It’s not his house. It’s your house. And he’s destroying it,” alongside a screenshot of a Washington Post article titled, “White House begins demolishing East Wing Facade to build Trump’s ballroom”, which included a photo of a demolition crew at work.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle defended the project, telling Fox News Digital that the ballroom is part of Trump’s efforts to “Make America Great Again” and emphasized that it is being completed at no cost to taxpayers. “These long-needed upgrades will benefit generations of future presidents and American visitors to the People’s House,” Ingle said.

President Trump announced Monday that construction had officially begun. In a post on Truth Social, he described the new venue as a “big, beautiful White House Ballroom” and noted that the East Wing is being modernized as part of the project.
“For more than 150 years, every President has dreamt about having a Ballroom at the White House to accommodate people for grand parties, State Visits, etc. I am honored to be the first President to finally get this much-needed project underway — with zero cost to the American Taxpayer!” Trump wrote, adding that the $200 million project is being privately funded by donors, companies, and himself. The 90,000-square-foot ballroom is expected to seat around 650 guests.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in July that the new space will address logistical challenges, noting that the White House currently has to erect temporary tents to host large international functions. “This is a much-needed and exquisite addition,” she said.
The project has drawn criticism from Democrats, including New Jersey Senator Andy Kim, who posted on X, “We didn’t need a billionaire-funded ballroom to celebrate America. Disgusting what Trump is doing.” Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren commented, “Donald Trump can’t hear you over the sound of bulldozers demolishing a wing of the White House to build a new grand ballroom.” Pennsylvania State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta also criticized the cost priorities on X, contrasting funding for the ballroom with public services.
The ballroom follows several high-profile Trump projects at the White House, including the installation of two 88-foot-tall American flags this summer and renovations to the Rose Garden, all privately funded.
