A Mexican beauty queen and social media influencer has been charged with murder in connection with a 2024 ambush that left a man dead and another wounded in a San Diego parking garage, prosecutors announced.
Authorities said Vanessa Gurrola, 32, was arrested on October 9 and charged in the fatal shooting of Christian Espinoza Silver, who was gunned down when his BMW was struck by bullets as he entered the Palisade UTC apartment complex garage on February 17, 2024.
A second victim, a 39-year-old man whose identity has not been released, was also hit by gunfire during the sudden attack. Investigators said the shooter — dressed in camouflage with black pants and a backpack — approached the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Both men sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Espinoza was found lying in the street and later died at a local hospital, while the surviving victim was reported in stable condition.
The motive behind the ambush remains unclear. However, investigators have suggested the killing may be connected to an ongoing turf dispute involving remnants of the Arellano Félix Organization, a cartel faction vying for control of Baja California.
Espinoza, known as “El Chato,” was reportedly an associate of Pablo Edwin Huerta Nuno, a Tijuana Plaza leader extradited to San Diego in August on federal narcotics trafficking charges. Prosecutors allege Huerta Nuno’s network supplied millions of dollars’ worth of drugs throughout California.
Gurrola, originally from Sinaloa and known for her modeling career and 1.4 million Instagram followers, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge during her October 13 arraignment, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.
She is currently being held without bail at Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee and is scheduled to return to court on November 19.
