A 12-year-old Texas boy returned home from school to a shocking discovery — his mother and her boyfriend had apparently packed up and moved out, leaving him completely alone.
Copperas Cove police arrested Keven Dwayne Adams and Erica Renee Sanders on Friday after responding to a call about the abandoned child, who is Sanders’ son. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by local outlet KWKT-TV, the boy went to a neighbor’s home for help after finding his family’s apartment empty.
When officers arrived, the boy explained that his mother and Adams had previously mentioned the family might move soon, but he had no idea it would happen without him.
Police were able to reach Adams and Sanders by phone. The pair reportedly told officers that the boy’s uncle was supposed to pick him up — but they offered no contact information for the man. When police eventually spoke to the uncle, he said he had no knowledge of such an arrangement.
Investigators said Adams “complained at length” about Sanders’ son when questioned. Child Protective Services also attempted to contact the couple for their current address, but they allegedly refused to provide one.
The neighbor who took the boy in told police this wasn’t the first time the child had been left behind — saying Adams and Sanders had previously kicked him out of the home.
Both Adams and Sanders were charged with abandoning or endangering a child without intent to return. Law & Crime reached out to the Coryell County Sheriff’s Office for information on whether the two remain in custody, but officials did not immediately respond.
