A tragic accident in South Korea left one person dead and several others injured after a woman’s attempt to kill a cockroach with fire went horribly wrong, according to police in the city of Osan, about 20 miles south of Seoul.

Authorities say the woman, believed to be in her 20s, used a lighter and a can of flammable spray to create a makeshift flamethrower aimed at the insect. She had reportedly used the same method before after seeing it on social media. This time, however, the flames spread rapidly through her apartment and into the wider complex, engulfing multiple units, the BBC reported.

A couple living on the fifth floor became trapped by thick smoke while trying to save their 2-month-old baby. In a desperate moment, they managed to pass the infant across to a neighbor in the next building, just a few feet away, Ynet News reported. The father was able to climb to safety, but the mother—a Chinese national in her 30s—fell while attempting to cross and later died at a hospital.

Police say they are seeking an arrest warrant for the woman accused of starting the fire, who may face charges of causing death by negligence. Eight other residents were treated for smoke inhalation.
