30 Minors Rescued from Human Trafficking in Texas
“Operation Lightning Bug” Rescues More Than 30 Children from Human Trafficking in Texas
Authorities in Texas have rescued more than 30 missing children during a large-scale human trafficking investigation known as Operation Lightning Bug. The coordinated effort between federal and local agencies highlights the growing fight against child exploitation in the United States.
The operation, led by the U.S. Marshals Service in Texas in partnership with the San Antonio Police Department, focused on locating missing and endangered children while identifying and dismantling trafficking networks.
According to officials, the results were substantial:
-
30 missing children were located,
-
6 child victims of sex trafficking were rescued and referred to support services,
-
3 individuals were arrested for harboring runaway children,
-
5 new trafficking investigations were launched, and
-
9 criminal arrest warrants were executed.
Additionally, more than 120 children voluntarily returned home during the operation.
The San Antonio Police Department’s Special Victims Unit worked with each recovered child to assess their safety and determine whether long-term care or placement with agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was necessary.
U.S. Marshal Susan Pamerleau emphasized the mission’s importance, stating:
“The safety of our children is the safety of our communities, and demands justice that we protect those who cannot protect themselves. Through Operation Lightning Bug, we reaffirm our promise to protect the most vulnerable and strengthen the safety of our communities.”
The U.S. Marshals Service operates under the authority of the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015, which empowers them to locate and rescue missing or endangered children.
Kirsta Leeberg-Melton, executive director of the Institute to Combat Human Trafficking, told Fox News Digital that both Texas and the nation have faced persistent challenges with child trafficking. She explained that traffickers often target children from unstable homes — those lacking food, shelter, or family support — and frequently use technology to find and exploit victims.
In recent years, the issue of trafficking has been exacerbated by lax border security. With years of open-border policies under the Biden administration, the number of vulnerable children crossing into the United States has surged — a situation traffickers have readily exploited.
By contrast, President Trump has made protecting America’s children and securing the border a central priority. On his first day in office, the President took decisive action to close the border and restore law enforcement authority aimed at dismantling trafficking operations and safeguarding minors.
Operation Lightning Bug stands as another major victory in the ongoing fight to protect America’s most vulnerable citizens.
