Love on Ice: Missouri Woman’s ‘Cooler Gift’ Leads to Felony Charge
Authorities in Missouri have arrested a 29-year-old woman accused of handing her former romantic partner a cooler containing a human fetus and claiming it was his child.
Makayla Annette Haedt was taken into custody last week and charged with felony first-degree harassment, according to court documents filed in Pulaski County.
Deputies with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:45 a.m. on September 18 to a residence on Laddie Lane in Waynesville after receiving a report of a “deceased fetus in a cooler.”
According to the affidavit, the man told investigators he had known Haedt for years and that the two had an on-and-off romantic relationship, though they were never officially a couple. He said Haedt claimed several months earlier that she was pregnant, but he didn’t believe her because she had a history of dishonesty.
On September 17, Haedt allegedly messaged the man saying she had suffered a miscarriage. Later that day, she picked him up to run errands before returning to his home. There, she reportedly handed him a red and white cooler sealed with green tape and told him, “Here’s your kid,” before driving away.

The man said he initially thought it was a cruel joke and believed the cooler might contain drinks. He waited nearly two hours before asking a friend to come over. When they opened the cooler together, they discovered what appeared to be a human fetus inside.
He immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office. Investigators said the man appeared distraught and tearful during questioning, telling deputies, “This is the kind of thing you see on the internet but never think will happen to you.”
Deputies confirmed that the cooler did contain what appeared to be human remains and contacted the county coroner to collect it as evidence.
Haedt is accused of causing the victim severe emotional distress, leading to the harassment charge. She is currently being held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 28.
