A Georgia man has been arrested and extradited to North Carolina after surveillance footage captured him tearing down a pro-Trump banner and opening fire on the property owner who confronted him.

According to the Swain County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Benjamin Michael Campbell of Atlanta faces several felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, discharging a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear, and willful and wanton injury to personal property. The incident occurred on September 6 outside the Paddle Inn Rafting Company in Swain County, WLOS reported.

Business owner Mark Thomas said he was monitoring his security cameras when he saw a Jeep suddenly stop on the road near his business. A man—later identified as Campbell—jumped out, crossed the street, and tore down a large Trump 2024 banner displayed on Thomas’s property.

Thomas told News 13 that he stepped onto his porch with his rifle and fired two warning shots into the air in an attempt to scare off the vandal. Instead, Campbell allegedly opened fire from the roadway, sending bullets toward the business owner’s property in a dangerous exchange of gunfire.

By the time deputies arrived, Campbell had fled the scene.

On September 30, Swain County deputies worked with the Cobb County Police Department in Georgia to track down the suspect. Search warrants were executed at two residences and on the vehicle believed to have been used during the shooting.

After collecting evidence, authorities arrested Campbell, who was then extradited to Swain County, North Carolina. He is currently being held on a $70,000 bond as he awaits prosecution.
