Dutiful dog leads police to owner’s missing 86-year-old mom who collapsed during walk

A loyal dog refused to leave the side of deputies — and his persistence helped save an elderly woman who had collapsed during a late-night walk.
On Sept. 25, a deputy with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in Destin, Fla., reporting a missing senior. According to body camera footage, a worried man explained that his 86-year-old wife had not returned from a walk with their adult child’s dog.
“She just takes that dog, but she never takes more than 10 or 15 minutes. It’s almost an hour now. It’s over an hour now,” he said.
Deputy Devon Miller, who previously rescued a cat from a drainage ditch, soon spotted the loose dog, Eeyore, wandering down the street. Eeyore greeted Miller warmly, showering her with kisses.
“Where’s your mama? Show me where your mama is,” Miller urged. Eeyore responded by leading her through the dark neighborhood while still on his leash.
Moments later, Miller found the elderly woman lying on the sidewalk. She was alert and conscious, though she may have sustained an injury. “Eeyore wouldn’t leave. He kept coming back to me. He ran up to my car and I said, ‘Bring me to mommy,’ and he ran back here,” Miller said.
The woman, overwhelmed with relief, praised her pet. “Good boy. Very good boy. I’m not even his owner. I’m his grandmother. Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said.
Eeyore received plenty of well-deserved pets and affection for his heroic guidance.
