PORTLAND, Ore. — A 65-year-old Portland man is behind bars after allegedly attacking another man with a guitar in downtown Portland over the weekend, leaving the victim hospitalized with head injuries.
Police say officers were called to 737 SW Salmon Street on Saturday following reports that someone was being struck in the head with a guitar. When officers arrived, they found a man bleeding heavily from his head and face. A witness at the scene identified the suspected attacker, who was quickly taken into custody.
According to court documents, the witness reported hearing shouting before seeing the suspect hit the victim in the head with an acoustic guitar. She told police that when she tried to intervene, the suspect ripped off his colostomy bag and threw it at her.
The victim, who was sitting in his wheelchair near SW Park Avenue and SW Salmon Street, told officers that the suspect approached him asking to be let into a nearby building. When he refused, the man allegedly threw a drunken punch that grazed his head and shoulder before swinging his guitar three times—striking the victim on the third attempt.
The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for a five-centimeter laceration to the top of his head. Officers later recovered the acoustic guitar used in the assault at the scene.
The suspect, identified as Cedric Anthony Hampton, 65, was arraigned Monday on charges of second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing. He remains in the Multnomah County Jail as the investigation continues.
