The Woman Who Used Me to Betray My Friends
DEAR ABBY:
I’ve been part of an online community for years and have made some wonderful friends there. We’ve built a circle of trust — people who have supported each other through thick and thin.
Not long ago, I met a woman online who seemed friendly and genuine. We hit it off, and I thought she shared our same values. But over time, I began to notice she wasn’t there to build friendships — she was trying to poach members from our website and pull them into her own project.
Worse, she began talking privately with the site’s owners — people who had done so much for her — and used that trust to get close to them. I later discovered she was using me to reach out to their enemies — the very people who once tried to shut the site down.
Now I’m left torn. The owners and many members still trust me, and I value that deeply. But I also know what this woman did, and it’s eating at me. I don’t want to betray confidences, yet I feel like silence makes me complicit. How do I handle knowing that someone I cared about was manipulating us all?
