Letitia James collapses in on herself like a dying star when asked if she ordered gun charges downgraded to protect illegals
The silence said it all.
New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York City district attorneys went mute on Thursday when confronted with a question about watering down criminal charges to keep illegal aliens in the Empire State from being shipped out of the country.
And even if they did not answer, the answer was painfully, pathetically obvious.
According to the New York Post, the moment arose Thursday during a news conference James and the DAs staged to brag about the number of illegal guns seized in the Big Apple this year.
Present were James, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, as well as NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
A New York Post reporter used the topic of firearms as a jumping-off point to ask the prosecutors about a U.S. House Judiciary Committee report released Monday that documented how New York City authorities are stonewalling federal efforts to fight illegal immigration.
“Did any of you order prosecutors to downgrade gun charges to keep illegal immigrants in the U.S., per the Judiciary Committee report, the recent House Judiciary report?” the reporter asked.
As the silence lingered, you could have cut the awkwardness with a knife.
A voice — presumably a press flak — cut in to move things along by asking, “Does anyone have on-topic questions here?”
Message to the media (and the American public): Don’t ask questions we don’t want to answer.
Politicians like James might love dog-and-pony shows like Thursday’s news conference, where they can claim credit for accomplishments they didn’t achieve while standing behind visuals of other people’s work (in this case, illegal guns seized by police officers who risk their lives enforcing the law).
But they hate when the occasion turns into an opportunity for them to face topics that won’t play so well with potential voters.
And the silence Thursday showed that these prosecutors know full well how badly that House report made them look — even in delusionally blue New York.
It’s almost certain they knew that a question about it would come. They might even have agreed beforehand not to address it.
But whether it was the result of planning or the silence came naturally, it’s damning.
To be fair to James, the House report was aimed squarely at New York City’s five DAs — Katz, Gonzales, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, Alvin Bragg in Manhattan and Michael McMahon in Staten Island.
But James’ job is being the top law enforcement officer in the state, and the reporter directed his question at her as well as the DAs.
An honest attorney general could have answered that politicization of prosecutions was not acceptable in her state and would not be tolerated.
But politicized prosecutors are James’ bread and butter. Her career consists almost completely of persecuting President Donald Trump by pretty much any means necessary.
Now, facing a re-election fight with career prosecutor Saritha Komatireddy, a determined opponent who isn’t giving any ground, James was hit with a question in a public forum she couldn’t answer. So she didn’t.
But here’s the thing: The House Judiciary report didn’t break the news; it only confirmed that New York City is coddling its illegal aliens to protect them from federal authorities. It’s a betrayal of their oaths; it’s a betrayal of the people they’re supposed to serve. But it’s happening every day — anywhere Democrats have the power to do it.
The reporter asking the question knew it. The DAs who tried to freeze it off knew it. And James knew it, too.
Their silence said it all.
