Tropical Storm Humberto is swirling in the central Atlantic, but forecasters are increasingly focused on a developing system in the northern Caribbean that could soon pose a greater threat.

The disturbance, currently designated Invest 94L, is already producing heavy rain across Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Hispaniola, according to CNN. Meteorologists say warm Caribbean waters could fuel its rapid development into a named storm by the weekend.

The key question is how Humberto and 94L might interact. If 94L stays weak, Humberto could steer it harmlessly out to sea. But if it strengthens, its track could bring it closer to the U.S. East Coast. To refine forecasts, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has dispatched Hurricane Hunter aircraft to collect data on both systems for updated models.

The situation is complicated by the possibility of the Fujiwhara effect—a rare meteorological phenomenon in which two storms orbit around a common point, potentially pulling each other into unpredictable paths. Forecasts currently suggest 94L could move north toward the Bahamas this weekend, bringing it near Humberto and raising the chances of such an interaction.

Adding to the uncertainty, a trough of low pressure over the eastern United States could either draw the storm system toward the coast or help push it out to sea.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center is also monitoring Hurricane Gabrielle. While Gabrielle is tracking toward Portugal’s Azores, forecasters warn it will generate swells affecting Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast, and Canadian shorelines in the coming days, FOX 35 reports.
