President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order officially designating Antifa, a loosely organized, left-wing movement known for its anti-fascist activism, as a “domestic terrorist organization,” according to a statement from the White House.
The announcement follows comments Trump made the previous week, where he suggested the group could soon be labeled a terrorist organization.
In the order, Trump directed federal agencies to use all available legal tools to investigate and take action against any illegal activities carried out by Antifa or individuals acting in its name.
“I hereby designate Antifa as a ‘domestic terrorist organization,’” the executive order states. “All relevant executive departments and agencies shall utilize all applicable authorities to investigate, disrupt, and dismantle any and all illegal operations – especially those involving terrorist actions — conducted by Antifa or any person claiming to act on behalf of Antifa, or for which Antifa or any person claiming to act on behalf of Antifa provided material support.”
The order also includes provisions for pursuing legal action against those who fund such activities.
President Trump said the designation was based on what he described as Antifa’s “pattern of political violence designed to suppress lawful political activity and obstruct the rule of law.”
