Young Women Now Binge Drink More Than Young Men, U.S. Data Shows
For the first time, young women in the U.S. are reporting higher rates of binge drinking than their male counterparts, according to recent data.
Roughly 32% of young women said they drank excessively in the past month, surpassing the 30% reported by young men.
Experts point to several contributing factors, including heightened stress and anxiety following the COVID-19 pandemic, evolving social norms around women’s drinking, and targeted alcohol marketing aimed at women. Research also indicates that women are more likely than men to use alcohol as a coping mechanism—an approach linked to an increased risk of developing alcohol use disorders.
