House Democratic leaders are demanding the immediate resignation of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr, accusing him of abusing his authority to pressure ABC into suspending Jimmy Kimmel Live!
In a joint statement reported by Politico, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other senior Democrats called Carr’s actions a “corrupt abuse of power,” following his remarks on a conservative podcast where he implied ABC and its affiliates could face regulatory fallout if they continued to air the late-night show.
The controversy stems from Kimmel’s criticism of conservative reactions to the assassination of Charlie Kirk. In response, major ABC affiliate groups, including Nexstar and Sinclair, reportedly pulled the show from their schedules.
Democrats claim Carr’s comments directly influenced that decision, framing it as an attempt to silence dissent and curry favor with the Trump administration. They condemned the move as “an act of cowardice” and “a war on the First Amendment,” according to Politico.
In a separate quote to Axios, the Democratic leaders warned they are prepared to pursue congressional subpoenas to uncover the full extent of Carr’s involvement. “We will make sure the American people learn the truth, even if that requires the relentless unleashing of congressional subpoena power,” the statement read.
The message ended with a stark warning: “This will not be forgotten.”
