Teen Babysitting Is Disappearing — And Everyone Misses Out

Babysitting has transformed dramatically since the days when Anna North earned just $5 an hour caring for neighborhood kids as a teenager in the 1990s. Today, babysitting has evolved into a professionalized job, complete with specialized apps and a workforce made up mostly of experienced adults, North explains in her article for Vox. As a result, teens hoping to earn some extra money by watching kids have fewer opportunities—something North finds unfortunate for everyone involved.

She points out that babysitting can be an important experience for teens, helping them build confidence and skills. But the benefits don’t stop there. Kids also gain something special when cared for by someone closer to their own age—a fun, refreshing break from the often strict routines at home.

Beyond individual advantages, North argues that reviving the tradition of teen babysitting could help rebuild community connections that have weakened over the years, reducing the isolation felt by both children and adults. For more insight, check out her full essay.
