Retired Professor Killed in Broad Daylight at Alabama Park
The Auburn Police Department has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the homicide of a retired Auburn University instructor.
Authorities responded to a call around 2 p.m. on Saturday regarding a body discovered in a wooded area of Kiesel Park on Chadwick Lane.
Officers found the body of a 59-year-old woman with injuries consistent with an assault. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lee County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Julie Gard Schnuelle, a retired professor from Auburn University.
Police have charged Harold Dabney III, from Montgomery, with two counts of capital murder related to Dr. Schnuelle’s death. A red Ford F-150, registered to Schnuelle, was reported stolen but later recovered by law enforcement.
Dabney was taken into custody Sunday morning after reports of a suspicious individual on Beehive Road.

Dr. Schnuelle retired in 2021 from Auburn’s Department of Clinical Sciences, as noted on the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine website.
In a statement, Auburn University leaders remembered Schnuelle as a cherished member of the Auburn family and offered their deepest condolences to her family and loved ones during this tragic time.
