PORT ST. JOE, Fla. – Recently released bodycam footage captures the dramatic moment when a Florida woman was shot by police after allegedly charging at an officer with a large knife during a confrontation last month.
According to reports from WJHG and WMBB, the Port St. Joe Police Department released the video from an August 15 incident involving 41-year-old Tekila Walker. The footage documents the events leading up to the shooting, including a series of hit-and-run incidents allegedly involving Walker.
Police say officers attempted to subdue Walker using a taser, but those efforts were unsuccessful. The video shows Walker exiting a vehicle armed with a 16-inch fillet knife and rapidly approaching a police sergeant. The officer, faced with what appeared to be an imminent threat, opened fire, striking Walker multiple times.
“She came at me with a knife. What the hell did you expect me to do?” the officer is heard saying moments after the incident.
WATCH:
Walker sustained two gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. She survived the shooting and was later arrested on September 1 in connection with the incident.
Walker now faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.
Port St. Joe Police Chief Jake Richards confirmed that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is continuing to investigate the shooting.
