Trump: No Voting Without Voter ID

President Donald Trump has announced plans to sign an executive order requiring voter identification for all U.S. elections—a move that could test the limits of presidential authority and significantly impact voting procedures nationwide.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS!” While specific details of the order have not been released, the initiative aligns with Trump’s ongoing push to tighten voting laws ahead of the 2026 midterms. He continues to assert, without evidence, that voting irregularities led to his 2020 election defeat, according to The New York Times.

Trump also reiterated his opposition to mail-in voting, except for the seriously ill and military personnel overseas, and expressed skepticism about voting machines—despite studies, cited by Reuters, showing they are generally more accurate than paper ballots.

However, the president’s ability to unilaterally impose such voting rules is limited. The Constitution delegates election oversight to the states, with Congress—not the president—having the power to override state regulations. Legal experts expect any executive order on voter ID to face immediate court challenges.

Earlier this year, Trump signed a similar order requiring proof of citizenship to register for federal elections. A federal judge, appointed by President Obama, blocked the measure, ruling that it exceeded presidential authority and risked disenfranchising voters.
