Nun chases down thief who stole credit cards from customer of religious goods shop
A Pittsburgh nun known for her bold stand against crime confronted a suspected credit card thief this week—despite being threatened at gunpoint.
Sister Mary Madalyn Schleifer, who runs the Sacred Heart of Jesus religious goods store in Bloomfield, leapt into action after a customer reported her credit cards had been stolen inside the shop, according to local outlet KDKA.

Wasting no time, Schleifer pursued the suspect as he was leaving the store. “He was walking out the door, and I started following him,” she told the station. “He turned around and said, ‘I don’t want to have to shoot you.’”
Her response? A message of grace: “I said, ‘Listen, all I want to tell you is Jesus loves you.’ And then he went out, and I went out after him.”
The nun’s quick response led to the recovery of the stolen cards. “You don’t think about that. There’s no why—it just happens so fast,” she said.

This isn’t Sister Schleifer’s first brush with danger. She told the outlet she’s previously confronted an armed jewelry thief and a man demanding money, all in her years of service at the store.
Her courage, she says, is rooted in her faith. “We’re all His children, whether we know it or not. Sometimes, there’s a lot of crud on us and we have to get that cleaned off to be able to see,” she explained.
As of publication, it’s unclear whether the suspect was apprehended. The Pittsburgh Police Department did not respond to a request for comment.
