NFL’s Heaviest Player Won’t Get a Chance to Play
Desmond Watson, believed to be the heaviest player in NFL history, is expected to be released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to the Associated Press. The report cites a source familiar with the decision who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Tuesday’s roster cut deadline.
Watson, a 6-foot-6 defensive tackle who played college football at Florida, went undrafted in April but was signed by Tampa Bay shortly afterward. At his pro day, he weighed in at 464 pounds, though he managed to shed 25 to 30 pounds before the draft.
Despite that effort, Watson never practiced with the team. He remained on the non-football injury list throughout training camp, reportedly due to not reaching the team’s target weight. While the Buccaneers have not publicly disclosed an ideal playing weight, Watson had been working with a team nutritionist to slim down.
“He’s still working. Job’s not finished,” Watson’s agent, EJ Gonzalez, told the AP.
