“We’re Gonna Punch These Sons of B*tches in the Mouth” – Newsom Threatens MAGA
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) sharply criticized Texas Republicans this week following the approval of a new congressional map that could give the GOP five additional U.S. House seats.
The Texas House of Representatives passed the controversial redistricting plan on Wednesday in an 88–52 vote, largely along party lines. The new map could increase Republican control of Texas’s congressional delegation from 25 to as many as 30 of the state’s 38 House seats.
The vote came after weeks of delays. Since early August, Texas House Democrats had repeatedly denied the chamber a quorum by refusing to attend legislative sessions. The House failed to reach quorum for the sixth time last week, with only 95 lawmakers present—five short of the minimum needed to conduct business.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton had threatened legal action and possible arrests to compel the absent lawmakers to return. After about two weeks, enough Democrats returned to the Capitol to allow the vote to proceed.
In response, Governor Newsom condemned the Texas redistricting move during an appearance on The Siren podcast, calling it “radical rigging of a midterm election” and accusing Texas Republicans of undermining democracy. “We’re walking down a damn different path,” he said. “We’re fighting fire with fire.”
The following day, Newsom signed California’s own redistricting plan into law after it was approved by the state Assembly and Senate. The new California map is designed to reduce Republican representation in the state by eliminating five GOP-held House seats.
