Cops: Sex Toy Thrown at WNBA Game Hit Girl, 12
An Ohio man has been charged with assault after allegedly throwing a sex toy that struck a 12-year-old girl during a WNBA game in New York City earlier this month.
Charles Burgess, 32, is facing two counts of assault in connection with the incident, which occurred on August 5 during a game between the New York Liberty and the Dallas Wings at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NBC News reports.
A witness told the New York Post that the object hit the young girl in the leg. “When it landed, the girl started screaming and freaking out—understandably—for about 30 seconds and got the attention of most people in the surrounding rows,” the fan recalled.
According to prosecutors, surveillance footage shows Burgess removing the object from his pants before throwing it toward the court. However, Burgess’ attorney, Paul D’Emilia, disputes the claim that the item struck anyone and says his client intends to “vigorously fight these embellished and exaggerated charges.”
D’Emilia confirmed Burgess voluntarily surrendered to authorities and has been released pending a court appearance in December.
This incident is part of a broader trend of similar stunts at public events. According to the Associated Press, at least two other individuals have been arrested in Georgia and Colorado in connection with comparable incidents, which they reportedly described as a social media prank. A cryptocurrency group has claimed responsibility for encouraging the acts, but denies any intention to disparage women’s sports.
