Democrat Rep. LaMonica McIver Smears Trump — Claims His Use of “Liberation Day” Is Secret Code for “White Power” … But Forgets Newsom Used the Same Phrase

Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) has drawn attention this week for comments alleging that former President Donald Trump’s use of the phrase “Liberation Day” carries racial undertones. In a social media post and subsequent interview, McIver claimed that the term was being used as a coded message.

“When Trump opens his mouth to say ‘it’s Liberation Day,’ he’s really screaming out white power. Modern day racism,” she wrote in a post. She elaborated further during a televised interview: “When he says, ‘Oh, it’s Liberation Day and all of these things,’ those are ways of him saying, ‘Oh, it’s white power. It’s what I want to do.’ Those are racist remarks. His number one targets are cities that are led by Black mayors. His number one targets are sanctuary cities that support immigration.”

The remarks have sparked criticism from Republican allies of Trump, who accuse McIver and other Democrats of mischaracterizing the former president’s words for political gain.

Critics also pointed to prior use of the term “Liberation Day” by Democratic figures, including California Governor Gavin Newsom. In a lengthy and sarcastic social media post, Newsom used the term while criticizing Trump and Republican redistricting efforts. His post included hyperbolic language and personal jabs, including mocking references to Trump’s business background and physical appearance.

While McIver’s remarks have been applauded by some progressive activists, others argue the rhetoric risks further polarizing political discourse. The debate underscores ongoing tensions over language, race, and political messaging ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
