Star Wars’ Star Mark Hamill Planned to Leave U.S. for Europe After Trump Beat Kamala
Actor Mark Hamill recently shared that he had contemplated leaving the United States if President Donald Trump won the 2024 election against former Vice President Kamala Harris. Speaking to The Times, Hamill revealed that he had offered his wife, Marilou Tork, a choice between relocating to London or Ireland after the election results did not go as he had hoped.
“She’s very clever,” Hamill said. “She didn’t respond immediately, but a week later she told me, ‘I’m surprised you would let him force you out of your own country.’ I thought, ‘That son of a—.’ I’m not leaving.”
Hamill expressed deep frustration with what he described as “bullying, incompetence, and the people in place” during the Trump administration. He said the only way to endure the situation was to view it “like a thick, sprawling political novel” rather than reality. Ultimately, he chose to remain in the U.S., believing there are “more honest, decent people” than commonly perceived.
The actor also took the opportunity to promote his upcoming film, The Long Walk, which critiques American gun culture and highlights issues surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Francis Lawrence, the director, understood what was troubling me,” Hamill said. “Gun violence in America is a huge problem, but as I spoke with him, I realized this was just one aspect. He said he would have been surprised if I wasn’t disturbed by it.”
Hamill criticized ICE agents for their treatment of detainees, saying they have been “brutalizing people, kneeling on their necks.”
“When I made the movie, I didn’t think about how timely it would become, but it has proven to be very relevant,” he added.
