Gavin Newsom Defends His Trump Mockery
California Governor Gavin Newsom is drawing national attention this week for his push to redraw the state’s congressional maps in a way that could benefit Democrats—a move seen as a direct response to Republican-led redistricting efforts in states like Texas. But it’s not just the political maneuvering that’s making headlines. Newsom has also adopted a surprisingly provocative tone online, mimicking former President Donald Trump’s signature style in a series of satirical social media posts.
In one post Thursday, Newsom wrote in all-caps:
“DONALD IS FINISHED — HE IS NO LONGER ‘HOT.’ FIRST THE HANDS (SO TINY) AND NOW ME — GAVIN C. NEWSOM — HAVE TAKEN AWAY HIS ‘STEP.’ MANY ARE SAYING HE CAN’T EVEN DO THE ‘BIG STAIRS’ ON AIR FORCE ONE ANYMORE — USES THE LITTLE BABY STAIRS NOW. SAD!”
Newsom has even given Trump a mocking nickname—“Donald (Taco) Trump”—with “taco” standing for “Trump always chickens out,” according to USA Today. He has referred to himself as “America’s favorite governor” and borrowed the Trump-era phrase “Liberation Day!” to describe his redistricting effort.
According to Axios, Newsom said the parody is intended to highlight a broader issue: how Trump’s online rhetoric has become normalized over time.
“To the extent it’s gotten some attention, I’m pleased,” Newsom said. “But I think the deeper question is how have we allowed the normalization of his tweets, Truth Social posts over the course of the last many years, to go without similar scrutiny and notice?”
