Billy Joel to Shut Motorcycle Shop
Billy Joel’s famed motorcycle shop, 20th Century Cycles, will close its doors this September after nearly 15 years in Oyster Bay, New York. Known for giving fans a free glimpse into the legendary musician’s personal motorcycle collection, the shop has been a fixture in the Long Island community since it opened in late 2010.
According to Joel’s spokesperson, Claire Mercuri, the decision comes following the singer’s recent diagnosis with a brain disorder. As a result, Joel also plans to auction off his collection of more than 75 motorcycles later this year. The bikes, ranging from the 1940s to modern classics, include models from Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Indian, and BMW.
Originally conceived as both a working garage and a public exhibit, 20th Century Cycles reflected Joel’s deep love for vintage design. “I like the automotive style from the ’30s to the ’60s,” he said in a 2013 YouTube video filmed at the shop. “I wanted to collect a whole bunch of those kinds of bikes, put ’em in one place and let people see what that era of bike looked like. Because it’s starting to be a lost aesthetic.”
Joel also hoped the shop would boost the local economy by drawing visitors to downtown Oyster Bay. In 2023, a portion of the street where the shop is located was renamed Billy Joel Way in his honor.
Although the motorcycles have already been removed, the shop has remained open on weekends to sell new, used, and vintage parts still in stock.
The closure marks a significant change for the local community. “I think everybody in Oyster Bay would agree that it’s a big loss,” said Ted Bahr, owner of a neighboring vintage rock poster gallery. “Billy’s place is visited on weekends by dozens and dozens of people… a real destination.”
Joel, 76, who grew up in nearby Hicksville, currently resides in South Florida and still maintains a home in Sag Harbor. His waterfront estate in Centre Island is currently listed for $29.9 million. In light of his diagnosis, Joel has also canceled all upcoming concert dates. A specific date for the auction has yet to be announced.
