Meet Artichoke: Unique & Sweet Little Dog Looking For Loving Home

Dianna Carney

The Scituate Animal Shelter of Massachusetts recently introduced a sweet and gentle little dog named Artichoke, who is about 8 years old. “He is overall just an awesome little chihuahua, not at all falling into the typical chihuahua stereotype,” explains the local shelter.

Artichoke is a unique dog who loves company and enjoys walks. He may bark when left alone initially, but settles down after a walk. He is a friendly chihuahua who gets along well with everyone, making him a great fit for most homes.

The shelter explains that Artichoke has been diagnosed with heart disease, which is common in small, older breeds. “He will start on a heart medication called Pimobendan with an expected cost of about $70/month based on Chewy prices. He would also benefit from a prescription heart diet called Purina Cardiocare $80 for a 20lb bag.” His specific condition is chronic degenerative mitral and tricuspid valve disease with moderate left atrial enlargement and left atrial chamber dilation (ACVIM class B2).

The shelter recommends adopters to have a good relationship with their vet. A follow-up echocardiogram every six months is suggested, but it is up to the new owner’s discretion. It’s important to note that Artichoke will likely develop congestive heart failure at some point.

Despite his medical challenges, Artichoke’s personality shines through. He loves to take walks, is excellent on a leash, and adores being with his people. His loving nature and warm personality make him an amazing companion.

Those interested in providing Artichoke with a forever home can visit the Scituate Animal Shelter of Massachusetts’s website at scituateanimalshelter.org for more information on how to adopt from the local animal shelter.
