Pennsylvania wife ‘angry’ with husband for leaving gun out ‘shot him dead to show him a lesson’ about gun safety
A Pennsylvania woman accused of killing her husband allegedly shot him during an argument to “show him a lesson” about gun safety.
Dawn Marie Freeman, 44, was arrested over the weekend and charged with one count of criminal homicide in relation to the death of her husband, Bradley Freeman, 40, according to court records.
Her arrest came after troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police were asked by a local police department to assist in a death investigation at a home in Adams Township on October 4.
Dawn discussed the argument with investigators. According to a probable cause affidavit, she told them that her husband had been routinely leaving his 9 mm handgun in unsecured locations where children could reach it for at least two years.
On Sunday, Dawn said she returned home to discover the gun lying on a coffee table in the living room and confronted Bradley about its dangerous location. She said he refused to move it somewhere safe.
Dawn told investigators that she became “angry” with her husband, grabbed the gun, pointed it at him, and pulled the trigger to “show him a lesson.”
The gun went off, and Dawn said her husband fell face down onto the living room floor. She said that she “screamed” and threw the firearm across the room.
Dawn’s son, who was home at the time of the shooting, performed CPR on Bradley while she called 911. First responders rushed to the scene, but Bradley was pronounced dead.
Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees concluded that Bradley died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Dawn underwent a voluntary interview with detectives, during which she claimed that she’d “begged” Bradley to stop leaving his gun in unsafe locations for years as she feared “something bad would happen.”
Dawn is also facing charges of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person. She appeared in court for her arraignment Monday morning.
She is currently being held without bond at Cambria County Prison, court records show.
