WELLSBURG, N.Y. (WETM) — Three people are in critical condition after a tractor pulling a trailer overturned during a hayride in Wellsburg, New York. The trailer was carrying 19 people, most of whom were children, according to authorities.
The crash was reported shortly after 4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday at the intersection in Wellsburg, about a mile north of the Pennsylvania border.
Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom said the tractor was observed traveling at a high rate of speed as the driver appeared to try to turn at an intersection. The trailer then separated as the tractor rolled, dragging the driver several yards before stopping against a tree.
The trailer, carrying approximately 19 people, continued a short distance, Schrom said. Most of those aboard were children.
Fourteen people were either treated at the scene or self-transported to an area hospital, according to Schrom, while five people were transported via ambulance. One person was airlifted.
