Grassley and Booker Clash in Fiery Exchange During Senate Hearing with FBI Director Kash Patel

A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing erupted into a heated confrontation Tuesday as Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R‑IA) and Sen. Cory Booker (D‑NJ) sparred over Booker’s questioning of FBI Director Kash Patel. The tense back‑and‑forth unfolded during a session already marked by sharp criticism of Patel’s leadership and accusations of improper conduct by the FBI.

Booker pressed Patel on allegations that the bureau had harassed journalists. Patel defended the agency, saying it pursued leakers of classified information, not reporters. Booker attempted to continue his questioning, but Grassley interjected, declaring Booker’s allotted time had expired. Booker objected, accusing Grassley of giving Republican senators more leeway.

The disagreement quickly escalated. Booker insisted he had additional questions and accused Patel of stonewalling Democratic senators while freely discussing matters on television. He delivered a blistering critique of Patel, calling him “an incompetent lackey” and “an embarrassment to the agency,” and accused Republicans of enabling Patel to avoid oversight.

Booker also criticized Patel for refusing to answer questions about alleged spending related to a girlfriend, saying Patel would discuss such matters publicly but not before the committee. Grassley countered that Booker had exceeded his time by several minutes and was showing a lack of respect for the chair.

Despite the clash, Booker insisted he respected and even “loved” Grassley, but said the chairman was failing to hold Patel accountable. He described the hearing as a “mockery and a sham,” arguing that Patel’s behavior and the committee’s response undermined oversight responsibilities.

Grassley eventually allowed Patel to respond. Patel offered a brief remark, saying Booker had called him a “thug” and suggesting Booker’s comments amounted to a campaign ad.

The confrontation underscored deep partisan tensions surrounding Patel’s tenure and the broader debate over the FBI’s conduct.
