The Numbers Behind the Fantasy
Elon Musk’s lunar metropolis is supposed to sit at the south pole, near permanently shadowed craters like Shackleton and Cabeus, where ice hides in the darkness and sunlight hits the rims almost constantly. The public timelines talk about thousands of Starship flights, a decade of construction, and a price tag somewhere between $100 and $500 billion. How the Fantasy Could Be Saved
There are only three ways to make a million‑person lunar city remotely plausible:

- Discover dramatically more water through drilling and deeper surveys
- Import water from asteroids
That last option is its own punchline: even with 98% recycling, a million‑person city would still need around 10 million tons of imported water every year.
