As Family Affair approaches its 60th anniversary, Kathy Garver — who played Cissy in the original 1966 series — has been reflecting on what made the show special, and why the 2002 remake never captured the same magic.
The original Family Affair told the gentle, heartfelt story of bachelor Bill Davis, who suddenly becomes guardian to his brother’s three children: Cissy, Buffy, and Jody. Brian Keith played Bill with a mix of toughness and tenderness, while Sebastian Cabot’s Mr. French became one of television’s most beloved paternal figures — calm, dignified, and quietly devoted to the children. Together, the cast created a believable sense of family that viewers connected with deeply.
Garver remembers that warmth vividly. She says the original cast genuinely cared for one another, and that affection translated directly onto the screen. “People really liked each other,” she recalled. “What a concept.” The show’s tone was gentle, patient, and comforting — a calm refuge compared to the louder sitcoms that would come later. It was also one of the first color sitcoms, produced with a level of care and craftsmanship that came from many cast and crew members having backgrounds in film.
When the series was remade in 2002, Garver hoped it would honor that spirit — but she felt it didn’t. Though she praised Gary Cole and Tim Curry as talented actors, she believed their interpretations simply didn’t fit the world Family Affair had created decades earlier. Cole lacked Brian Keith’s rugged‑but‑soft charm, and Curry’s energetic, theatrical style clashed with the understated warmth Sebastian Cabot brought to Mr. French. Garver felt the remake lost the quiet affection that defined the original, and without that emotional core, the show couldn’t resonate the same way.
For Garver, the enduring appeal of Family Affair lies in its simplicity: relatable characters, gentle storytelling, and a sense of comfort that still holds up. Watching it, she says, feels like “taking a bite of comfort cake” — familiar, soothing, and full of heart.
To celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary, Garver is hosting a special marathon featuring some of her favorite episodes, highlighting Cissy’s journey and the timeless charm that has kept Family Affair close to viewers’ hearts for generations.
