‘I just want to go home’: 13-year-old boy pleads for release in San Antonio capital murder case

SAN ANTONIO – A 13-year-old boy charged with capital murder will remain in juvenile detention after a judge denied his release request during a detention hearing Tuesday.
The boy, who was 12 at the time of the shooting, was arrested about two weeks ago in connection with the June 2025 fatal shooting of Marcus Estrada, 20.
Since the suspect is a juvenile, his identity and image are not being released.
Estrada was shot on Otter Drive near Loop 410 and U.S. Highway 90 in June 2025. At the time, San Antonio police officers said they were searching for three suspects.
The teen is the only person arrested in connection with the shooting. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
During Tuesday’s hearing, the teen asked Judge William “Cruz” Shaw to release him, promising to return to court and follow the judge’s orders.
“I would do anything. I will show up to court,” the teen told Shaw. “I will behave. I will be a good kid.”
The boy also told Shaw that he believed the case was a mistake and asked to go home.
The teen’s mother also appeared in court and asked that her son be released.
“He’s never been in trouble, and I don’t see him as a danger to society,” she told the judge.
Shaw ultimately ordered the teen to remain in detention, saying the case is still in its early stages.
Since 2023, there have been 11 cases of juveniles facing the charge of capital murder.
If the teen does not get certified as an adult, the maximum prison time he could face is 40 years.
The teen’s next detention hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9. The judge could consider releasing him at that hearing.
