Arkansas Teen Discovers His “Toxic Teammate” Was a Cottonmouth Snake

In Maumelle, Arkansas, a high‑school football player began his Monday practice with the usual routine: stretching, drills, and trying not to get yelled at by Coach Henderson, who believes hydration is for the weak. What he didn’t expect was to spend nearly an hour bonding with a teammate who wasn’t on the roster — a cottonmouth snake curled up inside his helmet like it had paid rent.

The teen slipped on his helmet, felt a faint tickle near his ear, and assumed it was just the foam padding doing that annoying “I’m old and crumbly” thing. He powered through warm‑ups, sprints, and a full set of blocking drills before finally deciding that something was off. The sensation wasn’t going away. In fact, it felt… alive.

When he pulled off the helmet, he discovered a very real, very venomous cottonmouth staring back at him with the expression of a reptile who had just endured 45 minutes of cardio against its will.

Witnesses say the player dropped the helmet so fast it achieved temporary escape velocity. Coaches rushed over, and one of them — the brave one, obviously — used a long metal tool to coax the snake out. The cottonmouth slithered away, presumably filing a complaint with its union.

Miraculously, no one was bitten. The teen was unharmed, though he did reportedly say he would “never trust a helmet again,” which is exactly the kind of statement that makes coaches age ten years instantly.

Local officials reminded residents that cottonmouths love cool, shaded hiding spots — shoes, equipment bags, and apparently football helmets belonging to kids who run a 4.8 forty.

The team later joked that the snake had been an unexpected “toxic teammate,” though several players insisted it still had better footwork than Kyle from JV.
