Family disputes 911 caller’s claim that beloved student was “extremely” intoxicated before fatal accident

A 21-year-old UCLA student died after plunging from a window overlooking a popular Washington hiking and cycling trail—just moments after a friend reportedly called 911 with concerns about her behavior.

Dayanara Nicole Urbina Ruiz suffered multiple blunt-force injuries in the July 30 fall near the Burke-Gilman Trail in King County. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have since ruled her death an accident, but questions remain about what happened during the young woman’s final moments.

Shortly before the fatal fall, a friend reportedly called emergency dispatchers and claimed Dayanara was “extremely” intoxicated and running in the street.

Her family, however, strongly disputes that description.

“My sister was not like that,” her sister Catherine told The California Post.

Catherine described Dayanara as responsible, independent and determined—a young woman who had traveled across the world for an internship and could attend a music festival without losing control of herself.

“She had fun and, like I said, she was very responsible,” Catherine said. “She’s not one to get, like she described her, sloppy or too drunk. No, that’s not my sister.”

She said Dayanara was the kind of person who kept her priorities straight and did not behave recklessly.

“My sister is the kind of woman that always puts her priorities first,” Catherine said. “She was not like that. She was absolutely not like that.”

As investigators classify the death as an accident, Dayanara’s grieving relatives are left defending the reputation of a young woman they remember not for one disputed 911 call, but as a kind and beloved daughter and sister whose life ended far too soon.
