Man Hunting for Al Roker Breaches NBC Security, Lunges at ‘Today’ Host Craig Melvin

A man reportedly slipped past security at NBC’s Rockefeller Center headquarters Thursday morning while searching for longtime weatherman Al Roker—then allegedly confronted another Today show host when he could not find him.

The bizarre security breach unfolded shortly after 9 a.m. inside 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. According to multiple reports, the unidentified man entered a restricted backstage area and began asking employees where he could find Roker.

Instead, the intruder encountered co-anchor Craig Melvin near the dressing-room area.

Witnesses said the man became aggressive, shouted a racial slur at Melvin and appeared to lunge toward him before security personnel intervened. The suspect was reportedly unarmed, and Melvin was not injured.

The New York Police Department said officers were called at approximately 9:19 a.m. following a report of a “disorderly person” inside the building. Officers took an unidentified individual into custody, and the incident remained under investigation Thursday.

The confrontation was not shown during the television broadcast. Within approximately 15 minutes, both Melvin and Roker were back on the air carrying on with the program, giving viewers no indication that an intruder had just penetrated one of the best-known television studios in the country. Neither host mentioned the disturbance.

Exactly how the man bypassed NBC’s security remained unclear. Some reports said he entered a secured stairwell and managed to reach the backstage area near the dressing rooms before being stopped. The breach immediately raised questions among employees about how an unknown man carrying a backpack could get so close to the show’s hosts.

NBC has reportedly maintained heightened security around the Today show in recent months. Nevertheless, Thursday’s intruder apparently managed to turn a trip to Rockefeller Center into an unauthorized—and extremely short-lived—search for America’s most famous television weatherman.

He never reached Al Roker.

Instead, his morning forecast called for immediate detention, followed by a strong possibility of criminal charges.
