NEW YORK — In a stunning development that has left absolutely no one surprised, two protesters who illegally climbed part of the Empire State Building and unfurled a large banner have been arrested after authorities determined that scaling one of the world’s most recognizable skyscrapers without permission is, in fact, illegal.
Who could have seen this coming?
The pair managed to make their way onto a restricted portion of the iconic Manhattan landmark before hanging a banner near the building’s antenna, prompting police, firefighters, and emergency personnel to descend on the scene while thousands of tourists paused to wonder whether they were witnessing a protest, a movie stunt, or two people who had completely run out of good ideas.
Traffic slowed as first responders secured the area and safely brought the climbers back down to earth—both literally and figuratively.
Authorities quickly placed both individuals under arrest.
Apparently, “But Your Honor… we only climbed one of the tallest and most famous buildings in America” failed to qualify as a legal defense.
Officials have not released additional details about the protest itself, but whatever message the pair hoped to deliver has largely been overshadowed by widespread public reaction asking a much simpler question:
“What exactly did they think was going to happen?”
Social media users were quick to pile on.
“So let me get this straight,” one commenter wrote. “You trespassed, climbed a skyscraper, shut down emergency resources, and you’re surprised there are consequences?”
Another summed up the incident more bluntly:
“Congratulations. You climbed a building. Here’s your handcuffs.”
Police have not announced what charges the suspects will ultimately face, but authorities emphasized that climbing restricted portions of major buildings creates unnecessary risks—not only for the climbers themselves, but also for emergency responders who are forced to rescue them.
Investigators say the case remains under review.
Meanwhile, officials confirmed that the Empire State Building will continue its long-standing policy of encouraging visitors to use the elevators instead.
