Plot to Attack Trump’s White House UFC Event Foiled After Suspect’s Mother Contacted Authorities
Federal investigators say a concerned mother’s instincts may have prevented what could have been a devastating attack on a high-profile event at the White House.
According to newly unsealed court documents, a 19-year-old Ohio man and several others are accused of plotting a mass-casualty attack during the recent UFC event held on the White House grounds. Prosecutors allege the group discussed using explosive-laden drones to create panic before opening fire on people fleeing the area. The suspects also allegedly exchanged maps, tactical plans, and encrypted messages while preparing for the attack.
Authorities say the investigation began not with sophisticated surveillance, but with a worried mother.
After becoming alarmed by her son’s recent behavior, online communications, and growing cache of weapons and ammunition, she contacted local law enforcement. According to recordings later obtained by ABC News, she told dispatchers that she and other family members had removed his guns and ammunition from the house because they feared what he might do. She also told officers she had seen Washington, D.C., marked on his Google Maps and described conversations that deeply concerned her.
Her phone call quickly set off a chain of events involving local police, the FBI, the Secret Service, and other federal agencies. Investigators searched the suspect’s phone and say they discovered encrypted Signal chats containing detailed plans, including possible sniper positions, drone launch sites, and discussions of attacking government officials and spectators attending the White House event.
Federal prosecutors have now charged seven defendants in connection with the alleged conspiracy, while investigators continue examining whether others were involved. Officials say the plan was disrupted before it reached the operational stage, and no attack occurred.
The unusual circumstances surrounding the case have generated plenty of reaction online.
