Olive Garden refused to pay a single mom her $700 tip then fired her the next day
If you’ve spent even a single shift in the service industry, you know that it’s hard work. Not only are you constantly moving from table to table, taking orders, serving food and drinks, and keeping people happy, but your pay often revolves solely upon tips. Theoretically, the harder, smarter, and friendlier you are at work, the more money you should make. Brook Skyes, a single mom from Georgia, worked her shift at the Olive Garden in Fayetteville on May 31, 2026, but this wasn’t a typical day waiting tables.
Skyes received an incredible $700 tip on a $32 bill.
The moment stunned the young mother and made her emotional. But her excitement was short-lived. The management team allegedly refused to give the woman the money and fired her. That sure doesn’t sound like the family restaurant Olive Garden claims to be.
It doesn’t matter how old our children are; when someone wrongs them, we want to make it right. Skyes’ mom, Buni Williams, posted about the incident on Facebook. She shared photos of the customer’s receipt, which included a sweet note wishing Skyes a happy, belated Mother’s Day and a very surprise blessing. Williams explained what allegedly happened next.
“My daughter has worked at Olive Garden for a year. Yesterday she received a $700 tip on a $30 tab and was obviously excited. A manager told her they could not pay it out yet and instructed her to write ‘0’ on the tip line until it could be verified. She became upset because no one could tell her how long that would take,” Williams explained.
This upset Skyes, who became a bit overwhelmed and asked a coworker to take her tables while she calmed down. Things apparently took a wild turn from there.
Williams claims Olive Garden fired her daughter.
When Skyes arrived for her shift the following day, a manager allegedly fired her for her behavior the day before. Management apparently handed the server paperwork explaining that tips of more than 20% of the bill require management review.
“They also told her it could take up to 120 days to receive the money and even called the police on her because she was crying and upset,” Williams claimed. “She was upset after being told she couldn’t receive a $700 tip she had just earned. And fired before her shift started today. That’s just mean!”
The customer saw Williams’ post and contacted the family.
Not surprisingly, the post blew up on social media. No one likes to see corporate greed attempting to best a single mom. The person who left the tip contacted Williams, telling her they locked down their credit card after hearing the story. According to Williams, Olive Garden spun the narrative, claiming they parted ways with Skyes due to her behavior.
“The customer confirmed the tip was charged Sunday. Then another charge attempt was made Monday AFTER she had already been fired. By then, the customer had frozen the card because of the post stating she was fired!” Williams wrote on Facebook. “But somehow today the story turned into ‘fraudulent activity,’ ‘insufficient funds,’ and now coworkers are being told the whole thing was a scam.”
People flocked to Olive Garden’s most recent Facebook post.
The comment section is like the Wild, Wild West, and Olive Garden seems to be ignoring it.
“Oh wow. This post has almost 700 comments.. imagine if that were dollars,” someone wrote.
Others had jokes. “When they say they treat you like Family, but that Family is one that was on Jerry Springer,” someone posted.
“700 vs how much in lost business? Thats a smart move,” another person added.
We understand policy, but something about this whole story seems so wrong. Olive Garden can give customers a never-ending pasta bowl once a year, but a hefty tip is where they draw the line?
