Man dancing in Indiana roadway while holding rare turtle arrested on drug charges

HARRISON COUNTY, Ind. — An Indiana man is behind bars after police say he was found dancing in the roadway while holding a rare box turtle and carrying methamphetamine.

Indiana DNR officials announced Tuesday that a man had been arrested in Harrison County after conservation officers found him “dancing” along a local street. The man was reportedly holding an Eastern Box Turtle, which DNR said is illegal.

“Eastern Box turtles are long-lived, slow to mature and have few offspring per year, and may not be collected from the wild,” a Facebook post read.

The man was reportedly found to be carrying both methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. DNR said the man was arrested on drug charges and booked into jail.

Meanwhile, the turtle was reportedly unharmed. Conservation officers released the animal near the area where it was removed and returned it to its natural habitat.

While Eastern Box Turtles are not considered to be a federally endangered species, they are considered rare throughout the Midwest. For more information from DNR on box turtles and the laws surrounding them, click here.
