Insane ‘Benadryl challenge’ resurfaces — leading to one death and sending dozens to the hospital

Doctors are again warning families about a dangerous social media trend known as the “Benadryl challenge,” which has resurfaced years after it first gained attention online.

The challenge involves people intentionally taking excessive amounts of Benadryl and attempting to stay awake despite its sedative effects, with the goal of experiencing a high.

Benadryl contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine commonly used to treat allergy and cold symptoms such as runny nose and sneezing. When used as directed, it is considered safe. However, taking large amounts can lead to serious health risks, including rapid heart rate, difficulty urinating that may lead to kidney problems, and dangerous heart rhythm disturbances.

In one reported case, a 14-year-old girl suffered a seizure after attempting the challenge.

Dr. Stephanie Felton, associate medical director of the emergency department at Cook Children’s in Texas, said the hospital has recorded one recent death linked to the trend. Over the past six months, the facility has treated more than 100 patients for Benadryl overdoses.

Felton noted that while the number of cases is lower than in 2020, when the trend first spread widely, its return is still troubling, particularly because it is affecting teens and pre-teens.

At the height of the trend in 2020, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about the dangers of taking high doses of the over-the-counter medication. The agency said excessive use can result in serious complications, including heart problems, seizures, coma, and death.

Officials also reported cases of teenagers being hospitalized or dying after participating in the challenge and said they were reviewing additional reports. The agency urged TikTok to remove related videos and monitor for new content promoting the behavior.

Health officials advise parents to keep medications like Benadryl stored securely and out of sight, especially if there is a risk of misuse. They also recommend that healthcare providers remain alert to the trend.

Felton emphasized the importance of open communication between parents and children about social media and the content they encounter online, encouraging ongoing conversations so young people feel comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance.
