Long Island woman throws dynamite at sleeping boyfriend — and his hand is blown off trying to save himself
A Long Island woman has been convicted after a violent incident in which she hurled a homemade explosive at her boyfriend while he slept, ultimately causing him to lose his hand, authorities said.
Keyonna Waddell, 35, was found guilty Friday in connection with the March 2024 attack, which followed a heated argument between the couple, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors said the case underscores how quickly domestic disputes can spiral into life-threatening situations.
In the months before the incident, Waddell had repeatedly threatened to use an explosive device against her boyfriend, though he did not believe she would act on those threats, officials said.

After their argument on March 22, both individuals initially left the man’s apartment. He later returned and went to sleep. At some point afterward, Waddell allegedly threw a makeshift explosive into the room.
The victim awoke to a hissing noise and noticed a burning object on the floor. As he attempted to pick it up and throw it outside, the device detonated, severely injuring him and destroying most of his hand. Authorities said he managed to get outside, calling for help, and saw Waddell leaving the area.
Emergency responders transported him to Nassau University Medical Center, where doctors amputated what remained of his hand along with part of his arm.
Waddell was taken into custody the following day. She was convicted of assault as well as multiple weapons-related charges. She is scheduled to be sentenced on May 27 and could face up to 25 years in prison.
