1990s sitcom star urges ‘friends on the left’ to tone down extreme rhetoric after WHCD shooting

Actress Patricia Heaton is urging people she describes as “friends on the left” to dial back intense political language in the wake of a shooting incident tied to the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, first lady Melania Trump, and other senior officials were rushed out of the Washington Hilton after gunfire erupted near the event. According to authorities, a suspect exchanged shots with Secret Service agents in the hotel lobby before being subdued and taken into custody.

As the situation unfolded, attendees inside the ballroom reacted quickly—many ducking under tables or seeking cover—before being evacuated. The event was ultimately postponed.

The following day, Heaton, 68, shared a message on X emphasizing the need for restraint in political discourse. While noting she disagreed with past Democratic presidents such as Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden, she said she never resorted to labeling them as dangerous or wishing them harm. Instead, she encouraged critics of political leaders to reject extreme rhetoric and focus on living their lives constructively.

Federal law enforcement sources confirmed Sunday that the suspect told investigators he had intended to target officials within the Trump administration. Authorities identified the man as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California. Investigators say he created a manifesto describing his plans and had posted anti-Trump and anti-Christian content on social media.

Officials allege Allen charged a Secret Service checkpoint at the hotel while armed and opened fire, striking an agent in the ballistic vest. Agents responded immediately, returning fire and taking him into custody. Both Allen and the injured agent were taken to a hospital. The agent was later released and is expected to recover fully.

The incident is part of a broader pattern of threats involving President Donald Trump, including two previously confirmed assassination attempts and a recent case involving an armed individual at Mar-a-Lago. The White House said Allen’s brother had contacted police in New London, Connecticut, before the shooting, warning that Allen had sent family members a manifesto outlining his intentions.

Investigators also spoke with Allen’s sister, Avriana Allen, who told authorities her brother had become increasingly extreme in his views and had talked about taking action to address his concerns.

Heaton has been outspoken in the past about heated political rhetoric. After the 2025 killing of Charlie Kirk, she criticized those who mocked or celebrated his death online, calling attention to what she viewed as hypocrisy among individuals promoting kindness while engaging in hostile behavior.

Following the 2024 election, she also condemned political commentators for what she described as fear-driven messaging toward voters, particularly claims that Trump posed a direct threat to their lives. In a video posted at the time, she called on media figures to reassure anxious audiences and stop insulting those with differing political views, arguing that dismissing voters as uneducated ignores legitimate concerns and deepens division.
