Man Arrested in South Korea Over AI-Generated Wolf Photo

A dayslong search for an escaped wolf in South Korea took an unexpected turn when authorities say a fabricated image sent teams in the wrong direction.
Police in the city of Daejeon have detained a man in his 40s who is accused of creating and circulating an AI-generated picture of the missing animal, a two-year-old wolf named Neukgu that had gotten loose from the O-World zoo. Investigators say the image appeared to show the wolf walking near a busy intersection close to the zoo, prompting officials to treat it as a credible sighting.
The photo had enough impact that emergency alerts were sent to nearby residents warning that the animal had been spotted heading toward the intersection. The image was also presented during a press briefing. Up to that point, search efforts had been concentrated in surrounding mountain areas, but the supposed sighting led crews to expand their operation into the city.
According to reports, the suspect later told authorities he created the image as a joke. He is now under investigation on suspicion of interfering with official duties through deception. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine of roughly $6,700.
Neukgu, part of a conservation effort aimed at restoring the extinct Korean wolf population, was eventually captured nine days after escaping. The incident drew widespread public attention, including a prayer for the animal’s safe return from President Lee Jae Myung. In the aftermath, social media has been flooded with AI-generated images and memes featuring the wolf.
