A 25-year-old Kansas woman with a background in both public service and broadcasting has died after being critically injured in a shooting authorities describe as a domestic violence incident.

Police in Wichita say Ivy Unruh, who worked as an engineer at PBS Kansas and previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps, was shot Friday morning at an apartment complex near 37th Street North, between Woodlawn and Rock Road. She was taken to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries several days later on Monday.

Investigators allege that her husband, 29-year-old Joshua Orlando, was responsible for the shooting. He was initially taken into custody on a charge of aggravated battery, but following Unruh’s death, prosecutors upgraded the case to first-degree murder. Orlando remains jailed in Sedgwick County with bond set at $300,000.

Colleagues at PBS Kansas expressed shock and grief over the loss. Station president Victor Hogstrom described his reaction as disbelief, recalling how deeply the news affected him. He praised Unruh as a capable and reliable team member who connected well with others and will be greatly missed.

In the wake of her death, a family friend created a fundraising campaign to help cover funeral expenses and honor her life. The message describes Unruh as a dedicated Marine and a compassionate person who left a lasting impression on those around her. It also notes that she had taken steps to leave what was described as a dangerous situation, but was ultimately unable to escape the violence.

As of now, the fundraiser has collected more than $10,000, with supporters continuing to contribute and share her story.
