North Korea has carried out another ballistic missile launch, sending projectiles into the Sea of Japan as its weapons program continues to advance. The latest test comes at a time when much of the international community is focused on the wars in Iran and Ukraine, a situation analysts say Pyongyang may be using to accelerate its military technology efforts.

On Sunday, April 19, North Korea fired ballistic missiles from an area near the eastern coastal city of Sinpo. According to South Korea’s military, the launches occurred around 6:10 a.m. local time and the missiles traveled roughly 140 kilometers (about 90 miles) before landing in the sea.

This marks the fourth missile launch by North Korea this month and the seventh so far this year. Analysts believe the steady pace of testing is intended to demonstrate the country’s defensive capabilities while also increasing its leverage on the international stage.

Kim Ki-jung, a former national security adviser to the South Korean president, said the launches may be designed to send a strategic message. He suggested North Korea could be highlighting that, unlike Iran, it possesses its own self-defense capabilities. He also said the tests may be an attempt to apply pressure and show military strength before any potential diplomatic talks with the United States and South Korea.

President Donald Trump, who is preparing for a summit in China next month, and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung have both expressed interest in meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. However, no official plans for such discussions have been announced.
